Bathroom Renovation Day 12

Today is the last day of spackling. The third coating. After sanding this tomorrow, the walls will be ready for painting.
More spackle...

Since professional painting would cost us too much, we've decided to paint it ourselves. I hope that's not going to be an ill-advised decision.
Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter (left) and Shale (right)
In some light, they look identical.

I was sold on Shale yesterday morning. But I like Revere Pewter better today. I think, in the end, either would work. It's amazing to me that such a frivolous decision can sometimes become a big deal, almost like making a commitment to a lifetime partner. The thing is, we can ALWAYS re-do painting if we don't like it.

Sweet Olive Tree

When we moved to this house, I planted a sweet olive tree in the backyard. It was a baby shrub then, but it has grown to be a decent tree now. It starts to smell just when there is a bit of chill in the air. And you can smell it blocks away.
The flowers look a bit like popcorn!
Kind of hard to see...but it's about 7 feet tall now.
"Smells good out here, Mommy!"

I cut a small branch off and brought it inside the house. It smells great in here now.

Bathroom Renovation Day 11

The second coat of spackle was applied today. They are going to put the final coat and sand it down so the walls will be all ready for us to paint.
The metal seam to reinforce the walls is covered with spackle now.
Thicker and smoother spackle around the light fixture and fan.

Bathroom Renovation Day 10

They installed more sheetrock and started with mud work today. There will be a couple more coats of mud to apply and the walls will be ready for a new paint. Since there is a new wall on the other side of the bathroom, we decided to go ahead and paint the whole bedroom as well.
A metal seam for the corner of new walls
A tape is applied to reinforce the seam.
This was the last wall to put sheetrock on. Now all the walls are covered.
Old light fixture is removed. Ready for a new one.
"My paws make great brushes!"
Every little hole is filled.

Second application of mud tomorrow!

Bathroom Renovation Day 9

So we had a couple of days of break after the tiles were installed. We were so anxious to see the finished bathroom already. Today, they are going to work on the light fixtures. It's looking more and more like a bathroom!

Recessed lights with a dimmer switch
Bathroom vent. Quiet and powerful.
A dimmer switch for when we wake up in the middle of the night!
New shower fixtures
"What a mess in here!"

Our contractor managed to figure out the old wiring in this house. Bless his heart! The room looks really nice with dimmed lighting.

Bathroom Renovation Day 8

It's Saturday. But the tile man is working hard again today to pick up where he left off yesterday. He's installing the rest of the tiles and applying mortar. I can't wait to see the finished walls and the floor.

The glass tile strips were completed in no time.
Kona watches as the tile guy gets out of his car.
"What does he have for me today?"

After a few hours, the bathroom was all tiled up! He did such a beautiful job on the tiles. We couldn't be happier with the result.

Tiles finished!

Floor is finished, too.
The entrance to the bathroom
We would also like to have some kind of tapered or curved strip to transition from the hardwood floor to the tiles.

We'd like to have this border at the bottom of this wall as well.

After he's finished with the tiles, we thought it would look nice to have a border around the bottom of the remaining two walls. We'll ask them.

Bathroom Renovation Day 7

Hooray! Bathroom renovation has started back up! After curing the walls with the special water repellent coating, now they're ready to lay down tiles. This is where you get to see pretty things!! Exciting!

Diagram for the tile design

We have a new guy today just for laying tiles. This guy knows what he's doing.
Lots of tile cutting going on today.

This machine is the precise reason why we're not doing this project ourselves. In the blink of an eye, your whole hand is gone!

Lots of mixing and painting mud.

I'm being like Kona, waiting for these construction guys to come to our house and get all excited to see them. Their cars drive up, and I can hardly contain myself!

"I like the new guy!"
Most of these are going to be installed by the end of the day....

And a couple hours later that day...
