Best Dog Treats

Our dog loves these treats now. Sweet Potato from Beefeaters is chewy and actually smells good and sweet. We cut them up into 1/3 inch chunks and give him. Duck tenders from Canyon Creek Ranch is his special treat. When we want him to do something, nothing else works better...well, with the exception of peanut butter.

This jar is probably our third or fourth one. He doesn't get tired of this one. It also comes in a resealable bag. I feel good about giving him this treat. We got it at the Pet Supermarket...his favorite hangout.

He doesn't seem to be allergic to the duck jerkies. A lot of treats are made with chicken. If you think your dog may be allergic to chicken, this could be a great alternative.
I am being real good, Mommy

My First Juice

Honeydew cucumber kiwi lime and ginger juice

I finally did it. My hubby helped me push down the honeydew in the chute, and he even cleaned up the kitchen afterwards. Thank you, honey! It was not as scary to make a mess with the juicer, but rather an exciting experience. I wish I had done it sooner!

Honeydew Cucumber Kiwi Lime and Ginger Juice

1/2 Honeydew
1/2 English cucumber
1 Kiwi
Small chunk of fresh ginger
2 sprigs of mint
2 tsp honey
Juice of 1/2 lime
Splash of seltzer water (optional)

I chopped the mint and added to the juice and shook it in a tall Ziploc container. I think zests of the lime would have made it even better. Next time. Still, the juice was refreshing, we could taste a hint of ginger in the background. This would make a nice summer drink, but also a nice cocktail. Hint, hint.

Gadget Envy

A few weeks ago, I got so psyched about making my own fresh fruit and vegetable drinks. I felt quite limited in my cooking for not having a juicer or a blender, and I wanted them for quite some time. After a long research, I decided to get them. Finally, I can make some awesome drinks with these gadgets! But now they are sitting on the kitchen table. If you look closely at some of the pictures from the older posts, you may be able to see snippets of these power tools in the background. I have to admit, I am a bit intimidated by them. The blades are so shiny and pristine, and there is no sticky food particles on the surface yet. I am psyching myself up to do it. The weekend is perfect because my hubby is here to try out the juice, too. Does anyone get this kind of anxiety?

Single-Serve Blender from Hamilton Beach. I got this for making my diet smoothies.

Then one day, when I was watching an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm on DVD, I found a scene where Larry David is making a glass of super food juice for his girlfriend. Hey, that's my juicer! It was black, but still the same model. I recognized it just by looking at the top of it. Then I thought, if he can use it, I can, too. It kind of inspired me in a strange way. So I approached the juicer and washed all the parts in the warm soapy water, getting ready for juicing. Anytime now. Anytime very soon.

Taro Mochi

Soft as baby's cheeks
Taro makes the pretty purple color

If you've had the pleasure of going to Hawaii, you already know what Taro is. They use a lot of it in their cuisine since their climate is suitable for growing the vegetable. Even if you haven't, you see many products made with Taro a lot more lately. It is a root vegetable like a regular potato and is often cooked like a regular potato. But the nutritional value of Taro is much healthier than the regular white potato. It contains as three times more fiber as a potato and has a low Glycemic Index, which means that it does not shoot up the blood sugar level quickly like regular potato can. You can eat it just like a potato, with much less worry. For me, it's the beautiful purple color of Taro that makes any snack a delight.
