Vegetable Garden

I planted some tomatoes among other vegetables today. Since we had too many plants last year, the tomato vines looked really crowded and did not yield very many fruits. We learned our lesson and decided to be more selective this year. We also have Japanese eggplants Ichiban, and green and red bell peppers, Japanese shiso leaves and shishito peppers. The raised garden my father-in-law made is still in a good shape.

Tomatoes, bell peppers and eggplants

Purple and red cherry tomatoes

The following tomatoes are what we've decided for this year:

  • Mortgage Lifter
  • Golden Jubilee
  • Black Prince
  • Super Fantastic
  • Black Cherry Tomato
  • Husky Cherry Red Tomato

Shiso and shishito peppers...from the seeds

Shiso is a Japanese herb that you might have seen at a sushi restaurant. The minty flavor often is used to clear the palette, used more often as an accompaniment to sashimi or sushi. I love using this in salads, noodles, and wraps and garnish meat dishes with it.

Shishito peppers are small Japanese green peppers. The flesh is rather thin but flavorful. When grilled, the flavor gets intense and sweet, though every once in awhile, you get a spicy pepper. They go great with grilled meats like yakitori.
